Hearts, Not Hands!

The Pharisees were big on external manifestations of piety. They had to look right, speak right and act right. It didn’t matter what was going on inside, so long as they got it right on the outside, it was ok. Of course, external manifestations are important, for what we give off tells a lot about us.

However, Jesus had a problem with them because they neglected their inner man. Their hearts were not right, their thought patterns were faulty and their private lives left a lot to be desired.

Once, they took issue with Jesus’s desciples not washing their hands before eating, going against their Jewish rituals. In response Jesus said “…Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” Mark 7:15 NIV. He went on to say the so-called defiled food doesn’t enter the heart but the stomach and is eliminated, emphasizing again that only that which comes from the heart can defile a person.

So, we must guard our hearts and not our hands. If our hearts are right, our actions will be right. It is important then to fill our hearts with the word of God. It has the power to transform our hearts and make our actions and thoughts right in the sight of God and man.

If our hearts are good, we won’t need to be so concerned about what we put out because our actions and words will automatically be right! As you decide on what to fill your stomach with today, let me ask: what will you fill your heart with?

Blessings!
