The Naysayers

You have probably heard this before: whatever you do, some people will talk about you! It did not just start with us! It was the same in Jesus’ time. Listen to Jesus in Matthew 11:16-19:
“To what can I compare this generation? It is like children playing a game in the public square. They complain to their friends, ‘We played wedding songs, and you didn’t dance, so we played funeral songs, and you didn’t mourn.’ For John didn’t spend his time eating and drinking, and you say, ‘He’s possessed by a demon.’ The Son of Man, on the other hand, feasts and drinks, and you say, ‘He’s a glutton and a drunkard, and a friend of tax collectors and other sinners!’ But wisdom is shown to be right by its results.” Matthew 11:16‭-‬19
John the Baptist and Jesus both had different styles of ministering, yet the Jewish leaders especially, had a problem with both of them. Nothing either of them did seemed to please these folk.
Does it mean you should disregard others’ opinions? Certainly not. Pay attention to wise counsel and constructive criticism, after all no one knows it all. Others have gone ahead of you and their experiences can guide you to avoid some pitfalls and make better decisions than they made.
Pay no mind though to those who talk for talking sake, criticize unnecessarily and those whose complaints are fueled by jealousy and a misunderstanding of your purpose.
As long as you are pursuing purpose, as long as you are on the right track and you are glorifying God in word, deed and thought, keep pressing on. The results will negate the insults.
Blessings!
