El Roi

Hagar is not one the frequently celebrated women of the Bible. Victim. Pawn. Conceited. Arrogant. She was all these at some point. She was also Sarai, Abram’s wife’s maid. When Sarai realized she might never be able to give Abraham a son though God had promised them one, she took her maid Hagar, gave her as a wife to her husband so she would have a child for them. Hagar successfully got pregnant and then we are told “… [w]hen she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.” Genesis 16:4. Sarai returned the “favor” by so mistreating Hagar that she ran away. Tired, teary, alone, thirsty and pregnant, Hagar found herself near a spring in the desert. Probably wondering whether she and her unborn baby would make it, feeling all sorts of hopeless and insignificant, an angel of the Lord showed up! He brought Hagar words of encouragement, assured her the Lord had seen her misery, pronounced a blessing on her unborn son and told her to return to Sarai and continue to serve till her son was born. Hope had been restored!! In awe Hagar named the place of this divine encounter Beer Lahai Roi, for she said “I have now seen the One who sees me.” Genesis 16:13. Wow, what an ending. Do you sometimes feel like that? Unseen? Insignificant? Do you sometimes think God has forgotten you? Well, He sees you and He will show up. That may not have been the ending Hagar was expecting in that dejected place but that is God for you! When others reject you or refuse to see or acknowledge you, He always sees you and strategizes to bring you good tidings. You are a somebody in God’s eyes. He not only sees you, He cares for you as well. Remember that. Blessings. Love, Lady Monica. ❤
