A Single Hour

Worry comes to us naturally, I think. I do not think anyone consciously takes a decision to worry, it just comes. We worry about things we have no control over, things we have control over, things that have happened, that may happen, the present, the past, the future! The list is endless.

In Matthew 6, Jesus talked about the futility of worry and established the one day at a time principle. He asked a question to demonstrate why worrying is fruitless. “Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” Matthew 6:27. In other words, though we give so much attention and priority to worrying, it is actually pointless. I know sometimes worrying makes us feel we are doing something about the situation so we keep at it. If we do not worry it seems as if we are carefree.

Jesus encouraged His disciples to take it one day at a time. He said, “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34. Each day comes with its own issues so in order to keep your anxiety levels low, focus on the day at hand. Commit the coming days to God and ask Him to help you through them as well.

Yes, think about the future, strategize about tomorrow, pray about what is ahead but consciously take a decision not to worry obsessively. Trust God to get you through what is coming!

Blessings.
