What God Wants

One of my all-time favorite movies is “What Women Want” starring Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt. Synopsis: Mel Gibson has a freak accident involving a bathtub filled with water, a hair dryer and waxing cream! He falls into the bathtub while trying to wax his legs, gets electrocuted as the plugged in hair dryer follows him into the tub. He is rendered unconscious and when he comes to, he discovers that he has acquired the ability to hear women’s thoughts! Yep, only in movies. Lol.

God’s children always want to please Him and we want to be sure we are pleasing Him in the right way. The right way being what He himself has prescribed. Trying to please Him in the way we think is right is pointless. Parents will attest that the child who pleases them is the one who does what the parents want!

Fortunately for us, we do not need to guess what God wants; we do not need a bathtub, a hair dryer or a freak accident to discover God’s thoughts. He makes what He wants known all throughout His word-through stories, bible characters, declarations through His prophets etc.

Today we will look at one of the many ways we can please God. He tells us through the prophet Hosea in his eponymous book chapter 6 and verse 8: “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” Pretty simple right?.

If we want to know what God wants, there it is. He wants us to be merciful to others, by being compassionate, forgiving, gracious, making allowances for each other, being humane towards one another, showing love. If we give up all our possessions for Him, pay colossal offerings, build a magnificent church building in His honor but show no mercy, He is not pleased. He also says He wants us to acknowledge Him by accepting His Lordship, appreciating Him, living our lives in deference to Him.

He would rather these than sacrifices and burnt offerings! So now we know, and now that we know better let us do better!

Blessings!
