Level 1 Faith Fellowship

Level One

During one of my premarital counseling sessions on communication, we discussed the different levels of communication. Level five deals with cliché communication where we usually hang around the periphery and keep the conversation safe “with no personal sharing”. Then there is level one where there is “complete emotional and personal communication”. The author of the book we use a guide posed a question which I found strange and which I posed to the couple. He asked, “at what level do you usually communicate with God?”
One half of the couple laughed and said it has to be level one because “it’s not as if God doesn’t already know what we are or what we have done!” There is no hiding anything from Him anyway. “If you stole two eggs you can’t go to God and say you stole one, that would be ridiculous”, she added. We all laughed in agreement.
I found the question strange for the same reason she did. To me it is a given that we will have open and deeply personal communication with God. After all, “Even before there is a word on my tongue [still unspoken], Behold, O Lord , You know it all.”Psalms 139:4.
When we go before God, there is no shyness, no airs; we let it all hang. There is no room for hypocritical prayers before God. In Luke 18, Jesus told the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, where he contrasted the two men. The former went before God and haughtily listed his good works while the latter openly and humbly admitted he was a sinner. Guess who experienced true freedom!
God already knows you inside out but He still wants you to be open with Him for that is the only your relationship with Him will flourish; the only way you can get the help you need. You can tell Him anything and there is no risk of Him rejecting you. Dare to have a no holds barred communication with God. That’s really the way it should be.
Blessings!
