God Says…

There is a very somber story recorded 1 Kings 13 and I will summarize. “A man of God from Judah” received a word from God for King Jeroboam. God told him not to eat or drink in Bethel after delivering the message and to return home by another road. When the king invited him home to eat and drink the young prophet said “… “Even if you were to give me half your possessions, I would not go with you, nor would I eat bread or drink water here. For I was commanded by the word of the Lord : ‘You must not eat bread or drink water or return by the way you came.’ ” 1 Kings 13:8‭-‬9.

He took another road as instructed and headed home. An old prophet who lived in Bethel heard about what had transpired between the young prophet and the king. He saddled his donkey and went after the youth prophet. He invited the latter to come home with him to eat and drink. The young prophet refused because of what God had said. The older man prevailed upon the young man saying “… “I too am a prophet, as you are. And an angel said to me by the word of the Lord : ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat bread and drink water.’ ” (But he was lying to him.) 1 Kings 13:18. The young prophet gave in and to cut long story short, God punished him with death for disobeying His direct command.

Firstly, temptation to sin can come from the most unlikely places. The young prophet easily resisted the call the disobey God when the king asked him to come home to dine but gave in when the old prophet insisted especially when made it sound like God had instructed him to bring the young prophet home. We must always be on our guard, work out our own relationship with God so we can discern what is and what is not from God. God does not contradict Himself and if we train ourselves to know His voice we will not be easily deceived.

Secondly, God has given us many direct instructions in His word-the Bible. If you do study your Bible you will find many of His direct instructions and will not easily to led astray by those who seemingly know better. Yes, God speaks to us through his prophets, priests, pastors etc, but He speaks to us chiefly through His word. As Christians our response to any dilemma, confusion should be first to discover what God says. And when He has given us direct instructions either through the spoken word or written word, let us obey and not seek to vary them through our own common sense, or what seems right to us.

Are you troubled by an issue? Confused about things happening around you? Not sure what steps to take? Start by discovering what God says.

Blessings.
