At the Crossroads

What do you do when you are faced with a tough decision?

Ruth found herself in a difficult spot at some point in her life. (Ruth 1) Her husband was dead and her mother-in-law had decided to return to her homeland. Thinking it was not fair to ask her daughters-in-law to come along to a foreign land Naomi urged both to go home to their families. Orpah obliged but Ruth decided to follow Naomi. With these deep solemn words, she stood her ground: But Ruth replied, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God”

Ruth had every good reason to take the easy way out, i.e. return home to the familiar-people she knew, customs she was accustomed to, gods she had worshiped from birth. Instead she chose the path she had not traveled before, she chose the God she didn’t really know, she chose to start life afresh among strangers who dispised her kind, she chose the narrow road over the wide one. What informed her decision? Perhaps love and compassion for an old widow who had lost it all or a curiosity to try Naomi’s God. She decided to stretch herself a little further and in the end gained more than she probably expected.

Ponder over these:
What informs your decision making when you’re under pressure or in a tough spot?
Are you quick to take the easy way out or run to your comfort zone?
Are you willing to take a risk and gain a better life or stay where you are and perhaps wallow in mediocrity?
Life involves risks and those who are risk averse usually stay at the bottom of the ladder. The decisions you take under pressure says a lot about your character. When you are faced with a choice, a life-altering choice, may the good Lord guide you to make the right one!
