The Power of Your Words
Job 22:28 – “Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee: and the light shall shine upon thy ways.” In this scripture, Eliphaz, a friend of Job after attempting to justify Job’s suffering, advises him to get in right-standing with the Lord, and then make a decree. Eliphaz instructs Job to speak against the circumstances he finds himself in. The decision not to speak in certain situations can imply consent or acquiescence. (Obadiah 1:10 -11). Failing to exercise the power of words when the situation demands it suggests acceptance of the situation. Amid chaos, silence is not an option. By remaining silent in the face of his adversity, Job was inherently accepting the predicament. By making a decree, however, Job could effectuate change. We are called to lift our voices irrespective of the circumstances we find ourselves in. In the simplicity of our words, Heaven hears and answers.
Make a decree and it will be established! A decree is a judicial remedy, a law, spoken statement of authority that is fully law. God wants you to make a decree. Exercising the power of your words can bring the manifestation of God’s glory. God listens to a man who decrees. You can decree in the face of adversity or warfare. (Joshua 10:12-14) Joshua spoke to the Lord; he commanded the sun to stand still and scripture says, 13 “the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies…”
You can decree in response to an act of kindness. (2 Kings 4:12-17) To the Shunamite woman who bore no child, Elisha decreed the birth of a son. 16 “About this time next year,” Elisha said, “you will hold a son in your arms…” He did not prophesy “thus saith the Lord”, he simply declared the birth of her son. He exercised the sovereign authority of the Lord to give her the one thing that she desired but lacked.
The primary means of communication is words. Words are powerful, they are spirit (John 6:63); words never die. The effects of words transcend generations. Words create worlds; your current world is a reflection of your words (Philippians 4:8; Proverbs 23:7). Words activate power; for every power there is a word. Every power that must be manifested needs a word; without a word, that power is redundant.
Exercise the power of your words through prayer. Prayer allows a believer to use words to work. According to Genesis 1:26-27, we are made in the image and likeness of God. By divine righteousness, God imputes to us the authority and power of a king. Thus, by speaking a word, we execute the power God has given us to manifest His sovereignty. (Ecclesiastes 8:4)
Whatever God must do, He needs one person. Throughout scripture, God picks one person to establish His purpose. From Adam we have mankind; from Jacob we have Israel; from Jesus Christ, we all have salvation. Perhaps you are the one God is seeking to use. Don’t let prayer become a chore, if you keep silent, generations after you may suffer. Use your authority and make a decree. Allow God to build you up in your walk with Him. Become a friend of God; for when you speak your desire, heaven will obey.
It doesn’t matter who you are and where you’re coming from. Isaiah 1:18 beckons you to come unto Him; establish that relationship. You can turn your life around by your decrees. No matter what you’re going through, when you’re in right standing with God, you can decree a thing and it shall be established.
It is time to decree!
