Privacy

Jesus had a very public ministry while on earth. He performed miracles openly and taught in open spaces. However I can recall three times when Jesus requested privacy. He kicked all the people out of Jairus’ house when He went there to raise his daughter from death.

Twice in the book of Mark Jesus healed in private. In Mark 7, a deaf and dumb man was brought to Jesus and “Jesus, taking him aside by himself, away from the crowd, put His fingers into the man’s ears, and after spitting, He touched the man’s tongue [with the saliva]; Mark 7:33. Similarly in Mark 8, a blind man was brought to Jesus and ” Taking the blind man by the hand, He led him out of the village…”, spat on his eye and healed him. Mark 8:23.

Jesus recognized that some things must be done or kept away from the crowd. Maybe the unusual way He healed these men required some privacy.

In our Social Media driven world today, some feel the need to put every single detail of their lives out there. Not everything is for public consumption. People have lost jobs and key relationships because of their Social Media pages. Some have been wrongly judged and misunderstood because of the content on their pages. Others have suffered emotional and mental upheavals from backlash received as a result of what they put up.

Even the son of God knew that some things should be done in secret. The next time you decide to post on Social Media, ask yourself if it’s really necessary; check your motive and ask what Jesus would do. May God give us wisdom to be discerning even on Social Media!

Blessings!
