It’s A Spade

“Let’s call a spade a spade and not a big spoon”. I do not know who originated that but it sounds pretty cool. Facing the truth can be hard sometimes and oh another gentleman I know once said “truth is hard but must be told”. It is easier to sugarcoat our words when we want to address a bad situation; it makes both parties comfortable but usually it is not helpful.

We like to give cute names and titles to our sinful deeds and un-Christian ways. What happens is that we then miss the opportunity to seek help or get to the root of the issue and deal decisively with it. The longer we refuse to call it out and deal with it the bigger and nastier it gets.

So is it just “chemistry”, “attraction” or what you have is a lust problem? Hmmm, it is not just sexting, it is sexual immorality you know. You keep saying you are a social drinker and enjoy an occasional glass of wine but you have passed out drunk on your couch a few times. Maybe what you have is an alcoholism problem. Saying you are just feisty does not conceal the fact that what you are is quarrelsome! You know about everybody’s business and you talk about it freely to everyone who will listen; yours is a gossiping problem, there is no other name for it.

While on earth, Jesus was gentle, loving, compassionate, welcoming all manner of people with all manner of shortcomings, but when it came to the Pharisees and teachers of the Law, He saw red! He called them out openly and boldly. He called them”whitewashed tombs”, “fools”, “blind guides”, “hypocrites”,  “serpents”, “murderers”, “a brood of vipers,” and many more. No sugarcoating there! You can be nice and still call a spade a spade.

David composed Psalm 51 after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his actions: committing adultery with Bathsheba and arranging her husband Uriah’s murder. The king accepted his wrong and humbly and openly confessed and asked God for forgiveness.

My husband always says that if you have a headache but go to the doctor and say you have a stomach ache, you will get treated for the wrong thing and go home still sick!

Let us not cover up our issues and shortcomings, rather take ownership of them and ask God to help us overcome them. Seek help from godly mature Christian friends and leaders too. James 5:16 encourages us to do just that. It says “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed…”

Blessings
