Assured
Assurance means certainty or confidence in something or someone.
A couple of weeks ago, my 3.5 year old daughter decided to play a game with me. I was quite exhausted (it was Sunday afternoon after all) and had no interest in playing any game. She did not really care and proceeded anyway. She would climb on a chair and jump at me in a way that I had no choice but to catch her. I kept asking her to stop and that I would not catch her if she jumped again. I might as well have been speaking to a tree. Amidst delightful giggles she jumped over and over again and I caught her again and again, exhausted or not. She had an assurance in her childlike heart that mummy would not let her fall.
We have an assurance that God is always with us, protecting us, caring for us and ensuring that we are not defeated. As we continue to dwell “in the shelter of the Most High God and rest under the shadow of the Almighty” Psalm 91:1, we are assured of the Lord’s keeping and deliverance from many troubles. His love for us compels Him to be good to us. We can be sure God is always there to catch us when we jump.
In the fifteenth verse of the same Psalm, we have another assurance that when we call on the Lord in time of trouble, He will answer us. We all love a good action flick when the superhero shows up everytime there is calamity to rescue the distressed. It does not matter whether he has been pummelled by the villain, beaten into pulp, bruised and battered beyond recognition we know that before the movie ends the superhero will always rise and take care business.
Well, God is more powerful, more purposeful and more loving than any superhero. He does not get tired and does not get beaten. We are assured beyond all doubt, reasonable or unreasonable that He will come through for us, whatever it takes and however long it takes. Like my daughter Faith, let us have childlike faith and jump knowing our dear Father is there to break our fall.
